5 Places to Stay in the North East of England

The UK’s North East is a diverse region with a mix of cities, coastal areas, and countryside, making it the perfect place for a family staycation as there is somewhere for everyone. If you are planing a UK holiday or even just a mini break then here are five places to stay in the North East of England.

Newcastle upon Tyne

Newcastle upon Tyne is a vibrant city known for its friendly locals, nightlife, and cultural attractions. It has a number of family friendly attractions including an array of free museums and open green spaces.

If you are wanting to stay near the bars, restaurants, and iconic landmarks like the Millennium Bridge then we recommend booking a hotel near Quayside.

Durham

Durham is famous for its historic cathedral and castle, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and absolutely worth a visit if history and culture are your thing. Just like Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham also has a great city centre however it is usually more relaxed and going at a slower pace with it’s cobbled streets and picturesque surroundings. You will also find a number of quaint shops and delicious tea shops that are perfect for breaking up your exploring and giving your feet a rest.

Whitby

For those that love a seaside resort then Whitby is your North East location. It’s a charming coastal town with a rich maritime history where you can walk along the sea front, take in the view and enjoy a traditional fish and chips. For the film buffs amongst us Whitby is also a must visit when in the North East as it was inspiration for Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and you can try ad spot the various places that got his creative juices flowing.

When looking for a place to stay we recommend the highly sought after harbor area so you can drink in for stunning sea views and also be close to Whitby Abbey, another must see.

Hexham

Hexham is not as well known with those from out of area but it is a beautiful market town nestled in the Northumberland countryside. If country walks, a slower pace and maybe a pub lunch are what you’re after then Hexham is just the place for a peaceful retreat.

Alnwick

Alnwick is another favourite amongst the film buffs! It has grown in popularity in recent years due to its connections to the Harry Potter films as Alnwick Castle was used to film Hogwarts.

These are just 5 options for places to stay in the North East of England, there are so many more to choose from but with a coastal trip, Hogwarts, country walks and a city centre to consider these will keep you busy for a while.
