London is a magnificent city with so much to see and do, but a family trip to the city centre can get expensive, so it’s best to factor in a few activities that are free to help keep the costs down. Natural History Museum
The National History Museum is probably the most well known museum in London and is without doubt the best one for children. It has some incredible displays, including the dinosaur exhibit, and encourages children to learn through hands on activities and interactive fun. If do plan in a trip to the Natural History Museum it is best to book in advance and factor in at least 2 hours for your trip. Entry is free, but donations are encouraged so please do make a donation if you can as however small it all helps.
British Museum
The British Museum in situated on Great Russell street in London and currently offers free entry to its permanent collection. It’s main focus is on human history, art, and culture with lots of displays and exhibits to look at. The British Museum is family friendly with family facilities and it often runs hands on activities for children too.
Science Museum
The Science Museum in situated in South Kensington and is another brilliant free museum for kids. Although entry is free booking is advised and sometimes essential at peak times due to its popularity. Here you will find all things science based with incredible displays and lot of opportunity for hands on play and learning. If you are planning a visit then it is also worth checking out what they have showing in the IMAX theatre too.
National Gallery
The National Gallery is in Trafalgar Square making it a great addition to your sight seeing trip and is perfect for those with an interest in art. Kids are welcome but this is more of a viewing gallery than a hands on museum.
Tate Modern
Over on Bankside you will find the Tate Modern, another free at gallery that is perfect for the art lovers out there as it specialises in showcasing both modern and contemporary art from around the world.
Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)
The Victoria and Albert Museum is located on Cromwell Road and is less known amongst the tourists but still very much worth a visit if you are in the area. Here you will find 7 miles of galleries that celebrate human creativity in many forms from art to performing art.
