Sugar and Dice in Liverpool is a quirky concept that combines games with a cafe. You can hire a table for £2.50 per person per hour and stay and play as many games as you want for up to 4 hours with your friends and family. It’s a real hidden gem tucked away on Cornhill, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre but still within walking distance of the train station and shops.
Available games
There is a very good selection of games, including the full range of Cartamundi games, across the back wall and they have even been grouped in to small games , like card games and then larger games and alphabetized to make it really easy to find the game you are looking for. Of course, if you don’t have a game in mind you can simply browse them all and see what takes your fancy or speak to the staff about what type of games you like to play and se what recommendations they have.
The selection is very vast and covers all genres from the classics to the lesser known with some brand new releases as well as some much older ones. There really is a game for everyone.
We opted for a game of Cludeo as both boys have always loved the kids cluedo but had never tried the original. We had a great time playing and, although I’m pretty sure there was some cheating going on, my eldest won and I doubt I’ll ever hear the end of it.
After Cludeo we moved on to a new game, CoLOR aDDict which is a very quick paced game that is great fun and totally chaotic. It’s all about recognising and responding to colours but also the names of colors when written in other colors. If you are familiar with The Stroop Effect think that but in game form and you are pretty close, just throw in a few random cards to really mix things up. If you haven’t played Color addict then it’s definitely worth grabbing a copy as it’s only £9.99 on Amazon and as it’s a card game it’s a perfect travel toy for taking on holiday with you too.
The food at Sugar and Dice
Despite only being a small cafe Sugar and Dice have a fairly big menu that consists of lots of delicious cakes as well as nachos, toasties and soup.
We all opted for sourdough toasties, I had bacon cranberry and brie and the boys had cheese salami and jalapeno, both were delicious (although mine was the best) and both were very generously loaded with fillings and seemed great value for money at £6.95, especially as they all came with a side salad too.
They also have an extensive drinks menus with all the usual hot drinks and soft drinks you would expect to find in a cafe as well as some very impressive milkshakes, the boys ordered oreo ones, and a selection of alcoholic beverages too. Great if you’re coming down to Sugar and Dice for a games night with your mates.
Overall we loved the concept of a games cafe and had lots of fun and thought the food was delicious too. If you’re looking for things to do in Liverpool with friends or family then definitely give Sugar and Dice a try but I would recommend booking in advance as although they o accept walk ins we found it pretty busy when we were there with a few people being turned away, so to avoid disappointment do book in advance.
